Connecting People With the Power of Information
Delivering Credible Multimedia News Stories
Using Professional Skills to Bring you the News about Ukraine, Independently
I am a veteran broadcast journalist with nearly a quarter of a century covering the worlds biggest stories. Oftentimes that means covering wars. I’d hope to put that behind me but then the Russians invaded Ukraine. And I couldn’t stand by. Here to you will find some of my earlier work but it’s focussed on the current war in Ukraine. I have been coming here for 22 years. And warts and all I love the place. I hope to bring you some greater depth and context than what my former industry would allow. I’ve deep respect for that industry and the constraints that is put upon it (and that it puts upon itself). But I’m going a different way. I’ll show what’s happening here to you as best I can.
Experience from 25 years in the Field
I’ve been in newsrooms several times in my career. But mostly I’ve been out at the tip of the spear, on location. And because of that I have some personal experience to draw upon. Again, it’s about context. I was in Moscow in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s. I saw the collapse of the Yeltsin era and the rise of Putin. I continued to closely follow events until September 11th, 2001 and I found myself mostly in wars in other areas. Still, I always came back to Russia and the Former Soviet Union. I stood on a rooftop in Tbilisi in ’08 and warned of a Moscow that was getting more aggressive and dismissive of international criticism or interests. I was on Bolotnaya Square when Putin re-asserted dominion over the Kremlin (and what voices could still speak protested). And, in one of the most influential moments in my life, I was on Maidan in ’14. I gave promises then that when (not if) this current war came I would bare witness. And that’s what I am doing. And what I offer to you.
My method
I’ve been creating video content for many years. I know how to make a story but I’ve always had to consider other factors because the nature of whatever organization I worked for had formats and restraints becuase, at the end of the day, News has by and large become a business. I have the means to keep myself going for some time but I’m hoping to get to a place where I provide you service you want to financially support. In the meantime I will do my best to post content that is compelling to you. I’m working mostly solo and so I’m working light. So I doubt it will win any awards but I hope it informs you as best as I can make it.
